A partnership of equals: Siemens and Landis+Gyr showcase joint smart metering solution

Zug, Switzerland June 15, 2010 – Siemens IT Solutions and Services and Landis+Gyr are presenting their joint, fully-integrated, end-to-end smart metering solution for the first time on June 15 and 16, 2010, at the EMEA Conference SAP for Utilities 2010 in Brussels.
It combines the best of both worlds: The IT provider’s smart meter Integration and Enablement (SMIE) solution coupled with the infrastructure and the Gridstream me- ter data system of one of the leading providers of integrated energy management solutions.

Due to the liberalized energy market and the complex requirements imposed by regulatory authorities, utility companies face the challenge of aligning their products and services to the needs of the future “Smart Ecosystem”. Smart metering is an important step in this direction. It allows utility companies to exploit significant potential benefits, for example, through remote management of their field infrastructure and meters. Additionally, smart metering brings transparency to the consumer behavior of end-customers. Consumers can actively influence and control their energy requirements for the first time.

However, the benefits of smart metering can only be fully exploited by analyz- ing the entire process chain – from meters through to back-office IT systems – in advance, and gearing it towards the requirements of the solution.

The joint solution from Siemens IT Solutions and Services and Landis+Gyr permits full process integration and can be implemented across application boundaries to cover the entire smart metering process chain: from Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), the Integration Bus and the Gridstream system including MDUS- Interface (Meter Data Unification & Synchronization) through to the intelligent meters installed at the customer’s premises, including invoic- ing. Thanks to the Landis+Gyr ecoMeter, an information display for the house- hold, consumers can keep track of their energy consumption at all times and can intervene and make adjustments if necessary.

Landis+Gyr provides the technical field infrastructure (meters and communica- tion) as well as the Gridstream MDUS system. Siemens IT Solutions and Ser- vices is responsible for the complete integration of the solution, the design of the business process and the seamless implementation of the process along the smart metering chain. In addition, the solution is designed in such a way that it can be integrated flexibly and in line with customers’ needs into third- party systems and existing applications.

Utility companies and consumers can reap long-term benefits from the years of experience and the technical know-how and IT competence that both com- panies possess. This is evidenced by a number of successfully implemented smart metering projects, such as the Milan municipal department of works, where Siemens IT Solutions and Services implemented the complete spec- trum of smart metering services plus all business processes in ERP, and still continues to manage them today.
